LEADERSHIP TEAM REPORT
Hi Everyone,
As I write this week’s newsletter article I am once again so proud of our community. Jones Hill has continued to demonstrate our strong moral and social strength with the great support of the ANZAC activities. I had the pleasure of taking seven of our school leaders to Brisbane to attend the ANZAC Students’ Commemoration Ceremony at ANZAC Square. These students were very excited to be some of the first to see the newly upgraded ANZAC Square.
Our school leaders ran a fantastic ANZAC parade at school while approximately 30 students attended the Dawn Service and over 100 students took part in the march. Well done Jones Hill!

Handball Fun!
Today the students and staff went head to head in a very spirited handball match. Two of our Year 6 leaders, Lilliana and Roxy, had a great idea to challenge staff to a game of handball. Though the Year 6 students thought they would have an advantage and would win easily, our staff surprised everyone and came out triumphant winning the match 45 – 37 wins. It was a very fun game for those participating and the huge crowd watching were cheering excitedly.

NAPLAN
On Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will take part in NAPLAN - National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy.
Skills that will be tested include, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. These tests are completed here at school and are considered just another part of the curriculum.
It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compares with students throughout Australia. The data is used to improve programs and planning for individual students.
The children have been well prepared for the exams and need not stress about the day. It is imperative that the children be present on the day. Students who are not participating on the day will be catered for with alternative arrangements, at school.
More information is available on the NAP website
This is an example of a question for NAPLAN testing.

Cross Country – District Trials
Some of our students competed in the District Cross Country Trials yesterday. We would like to congratulate them on their efforts and the proud way they represented Jones Hill school.
A special congratulations to Fred, Alice and Sophie who competed and were selected to run in the upcoming Wide Bay Trials.
All Students competed extremely well and did their very best.
NRL Development Cup Gala Day
This Friday 10th May our NRL Development Cup Team will be competing against other schools at the Gala Day. The boys have been training hard in preparation for this day. We wish the NRL Jones Hill Team good luck!
Mother’s Day
We would like to wish all of our mothers a very happy and relaxing Mother’s Day this Sunday. The P&C are running the Mother’s Day Stall at school on Thursday 9th May. Children can purchase Mother’s Day items for the special person in their lives.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
Do you shop at Woolworths? Don’t forget to collect the Earn and Learn stickers for our school. In the past few years this program has provided many free items across many subjects to enhance the learning experiences of our students. Sheets are available from the Jones Hill Office for you to fill with stickers. These sheets are then placed in the green box in front of our reception desk.
Containers to the office please
Jones Hill State School families and community members have been fantastic at supporting our efforts to keep the environment clean and rubbish free!
We appreciate all your support. Please send in your containers to the JONES HILL State School OFFICE – plastic bottles, cans, tetra packs, glass bottles (parents please deliver these to the office, not students).
Great job, Jones Hill community!
Kind Regards,
James Watt - Principal
Stacey Seed – Deputy Principal

SWPBS NEWS
In classes across the school we have been learning about how to show Learning, Safety, Respect and Relationships during break times and before school. Students have discussed that these times are quiet transitions and need to be safe.
We have also been learning about how to be good learners in the playground. Students have discussed what playgrounds should look, sound and feel like. Discussion points have been around following instructions, how to take turns, walking on the pathways and how to use the playgrounds and equipment correctly.
We have had a wonderful start to the term with students endeavouring to work towards their behaviour goals.

LEM’s
Over the next few weeks, students will be looking at the rules of position for the phonogram ‘a’. The phonogram ‘a’ has five sounds –
/a/ as in fat, /a/ as in baby, /a/ as in bath, /a/ as in all and /a/ as in wash.
The third sound of ‘a’ in the word bath, is making the sound /ar/. We also have the phonogram ‘ar’ that makes the same sound. We use /a/ for the /ar/ sound when it is followed by two consonants like in bath/path, but we use /ar/ when it is followed by one consonant like in dark/cart.
The fourth sound of ‘a’ makes the /or/ sound and it is always followed by ‘l’, ‘ll’ or ‘lk’.
The fifth sound of ‘a’ makes the /o/ sound like in was. The phonogram ‘a’ makes this sound when it is preceded by a ‘w’, ‘wh’ or ‘qu’.
Can you sort these words into the correct sound column.
MEET OUR TEACHERS
Julie Jones – SEP Teacher
I'm Julie Jones and I work as a support teacher which I love. It is an absolute privilege spending time with our students, both in the classroom and in the Rainbow Room. I live on the Sunshine Coast and in my spare time I am often at the beach, usually walking or occasionally fishing. I also enjoy reading, music, bike riding and yoga.
CANBERRA FUNDRAISING
The Canberra meeting held last week was well attended. There will be a Canberra fundraising meeting held next Monday 13 May at 5:15pm in the school library. This meeting is to establish a committee and gain ideas about what fundraising will be done. If you can’t attend this meeting but would like to help, please contact the office on 54890555 and we will pass your details on to the committee. If it is decided that no fundraising will be carried out, the full cost of the trip will be passed onto the parents, including the cost of the bus (to and from the airport) and also the Canberra jacket.
RELAY FOR LIFE
Each year Jones Hill School has a team of Year 6 students take part in Gympie’s Relay for Life. This year we have decided to extend the invitation to all students. Relay for Life is a community fundraising challenge raising vital funds to support cancer patients and the Cancer Council.
Although the event runs overnight (3pm Saturday October 26 to 9am Sunday October 27) the students will only participate from 3pm to 7:30pm on the Saturday. Fundraising events will be held at the school including our yearly 5 cent class challenge in August. Students may also ask for sponsorship donations from family and friends.
If you think your child would like to represent the school at this event please contact Mrs Hurren as soon as possible (email jhurr5@eq.edu.au) . Further information will be sent home with students to explain registration (including cost) and details of the event. Please note students from Prep to Year 3 will require a parent or guardian to supervise them on the day.
If you would like further information please contact Mrs Hurren.
LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS
Hi everyone! Thank you for your continued support in our School Library, it is always greatly appreciated!
Due to the recent success of the Book Fair, we now have many new resources which require covering.
Is there anyone who has an hour or two to spare and could assist in any way? Working with books can be very therapeutic so come along, enjoy a moment or two and bring a friend to chat over a book or two, or three or four. We welcome any help you are able to give to your child’s school library!
Thankyou
Annie Walters
