Leadership Team Report

AIR CONDITIONING

Our summers are getting hotter everywhere and air conditioning is no longer a luxury. As this season approaches we are pleased to announce the installation of our first air conditioners in classrooms. During November, classrooms PCM, PJM and 1B will be air conditioned ready for the heat that summer brings. In early 2016, Modular 5 will be air conditioned (currently classrooms 4R and 4L).

The school will be working closely with the P&C over the 2016 year to raise funds to eventually air condition all classrooms at our school.

How air conditioning will help at Jones Hill School:

  • Many of our buildings are thermally inefficient. This exacerbates the need for air conditioning due to heat absorbed through roofing and walls. When the temperature reaches a certain point ceiling fans do not effectively provide adequate relief.
  • Young children are more prone to heat stress than adults and faster dehydration. Especially after PE lessons or running around during lunch breaks. This heat stress can cause headaches and create lethargy.
  • A temperature controlled classroom will contribute positively to learning outcomes improving student concentration and behaviour.

Jones Hill School falls outside any funding by the Queensland Government so the cost of air conditioning must be met by the school and P&C. The estimated cost we envisage for classrooms will be between $5,000 and $6,000 at least. Shortly the P&C will consult with parents about ways to fund this project. They are hoping to send a survey to parents. The money raised by the P&C for air conditioning is totally separate to the fundraising that is done by the committee each year.

We are confident that fundraising for air conditioning will gather momentum as we continue to better understand the benefits to each and every student.

FACE BOOK

The Jones Hill State School Face Book page has gone live this week. https://www.facebook.com/JonesHillSS/ Maintaining an online presence is vital for schools. It not only keeps the school community up to date with activities through a medium that is preferred by many, but it also provides the potential of attracting new families to our great school. Our Facebook page is a place where we promote our school community by building school spirit. We ask that our school community highlight the positives and bring to the community's attention the good things that make our school great.

We invite our community to positively engage in this social media. As always if you have concerns around your child's schooling please continue to contact us personally and not on social media.

Please click on the link below to read our Jones Hill Social Media Policy.

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU

We would like to congratulate all the former Jones Hill students who recently received awards at their High School Annual Award Nights. It was a pleasure to see that so many of you have continued to succeed in your schooling endeavours and we are pleased that Jones Hill School helped lay such a strong foundation in your primary education, preparing you for your high school studies. We wish you all the very best with your future studies.

Thank you to all the staff members and parents who made our recent Rewards Day a great success. Congratulations to the children on their good behaviour.

A big thank you and congratulations also goes to our P&C for their enormous effort with fundraising. An amazing amount of money has been raised to support our students learning. A special thank you to Steve Delisser for his assistance in collecting the high number of lost balls from around the school grounds. Students may collect these from the office.

CATCHMENT AREAS

There has been some recent confusion of catchment areas and high school enrolments. While all schools have a catchment area, Enrolment Management Plans (EMP) are only enforced when schools are close to or at capacity.

These EMP's only apply to students who live outside the school catchment area they wish to attend. For example if you wish for your child to attend James Nash State High School but you live at Long Flat, you would be outside the catchment area and subject to the school EMP. The ability to enrol at a high school is in no way related to the primary school your chose to attend.

CROSSING UPGRADE

Over the Christmas break. Gympie regional Council will conduct some works to upgrade our crossing on McIntosh Creek Rd.

This information is also available on the council website.

Kind Regards,

James Watt and Helen Grogan

Thank you

The P & C Committee would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the people involved with raising funds for our school this year. This year we have raised $17,560.

From the fundraising committee, thank you to anyone who has baked for any of our stalls, donated items for sale at any of our stalls, purchased raffle tickets or has helped out at any of our events .We would like to say thank you to the parents and students for supporting our events and activities, without you we could not continue to raise these funds.

We have contributed over $16,000 to the school this year for:

  • The music program
  • Science and classroom equipment
  • Playground equipment
  • Robotics
  • SWPBS (School Wide Positive Behaviour System)
  • Contribution towards the 32 new computers
  • Contribution to improving the bandwidth (internet speed upgrade)
  • Graduation gifts for the 2015 preps and year 6 students
  • Contribution to a forensic science workshop in 2016

In addition to this the P&C are matching the school dollar for dollar in the roll out of air conditioning, to have 3 classrooms complete in readiness for the 2016 school year.

We would also like to advise that the Annual General Meeting will be held on the 8th February 2016, commencing at 7pm, with all positions open for nominees.

We would also like to wish the year 6 students all the best for their transition into High School.

With our year 6 students leaving so are their parents. It is with a heavy heart that we also must say a very fond farewell to Jill Wells who has been a very active part of our P&C for a long period of time, as uniform convenor and many other positions during her time. Another member also leaving as this is their child's last year with the school is Denise Cottrill. Denise has been a great member of our fundraising team. Both of these ladies have contributed a lot to Jones Hill during their time here. They will be surly missed.

We wish you all a Happy Holiday, over the Christmas Break and look forward to seeing you here next year.

Kind regards
P&C Committee 2015.

Girl Guides

Guiding provides a values based dynamic and flexible non-formal educational program for girls and young women in a fun and supportive girl's only environment. Girls develop leadership skills and a sense of personal responsibility and a shared purpose to make the world a better place.

Guides discover, decide, plan, participate and develop their program to suit their Unit with the guidance of an Adult Leader.

Guiding activities vary from week to week and ensure the positive Guiding motto's of "Be Prepared" and 'Guides can do anything.'

  • If you join Girl Guides between 5-17 you will be a youth member and placed into a Unit.
  • Units are structured so girls are with their own age group.
  • Unit meetings usually take place once a week during the Queensland school term for 2 hours within a local hut or community space.
  • Units have opportunities to participate in many programs outside Unit meetings, for example: helping run community events, embrace the outdoors through camping and other adventurous activities, enjoy social outings with other Units and even learn how to save a life.

Inspire Girls! Unit Leaders and Assistant Leaders Required

Unit Leaders and Assistant Unit Leaders drive weekly meetings, helping the girls to plan activities, achieve goals, and have fun.

You don't need to have been a Guide yourself. Training is provided

  • Make a difference to girls' lives
  • Learn new skills and develop existing ones
  • Be part of a team of like-minded women
  • Give your CV a boost by developing management and leadership skills
  • Develop lasting friendships with other Leaders
  • Take action on issues which affect the lives of women in Australia and overseas
